Loftus/Palmer in Biology 30

If you haven't heard of Dr. Elizabeth Loftus and her amazing research ... you should.  We are watching videos like the one below to see how students can be coerced into answering questions the way I want them too.  Coercion and suggestive questioning can fool even the most aware viewer!

Student question on 'Creation/Evolution Debate'

An email from one of my online students:

Hello Mr. Binsfeld, I am currently working on the chapter in the Biology course concerning Charles Darwin, and I have a question for you. If you don't mind me asking, what is your opinion on the creation vs. evolution debate? Seeing as you are a biology teacher in a catholic school. If you do not wish to respond I fully understand.

My response:

I have been asked this question many times by my Biology students over the last 21 years.  The Catholic church has no issue with evolution ... and neither do I.  There are overwhelming facts and evidence in support of the theory of evolution.  Unfortunately the general public doesn't understand the concept of 'theory'.  As you know now a 'theory' is essentially a 'fact' in the world of science because there is so much evidence that supports it one would almost be foolish to ignore it!  No one debates the 'germ theory' for instance .. bacteria, viruses, fungus are small creatures that make us sick.. Theory in this instance is not debated .. but evolution is ..

The issue with Catholicism and evolution is the 'ensouling' of the human.. something which I can't comment on and is still a sticking point.  Do a bit of research on your own using reputable web-sites.

As I tell my students in-class ... 'There is no debate, evolution has occurred, is occurring and will continue to occur - look at the evidence!'

Cheers!
